The Behrends Family
The Behrends family settled in Luckenbach in the 1870's. The family earned their living by hauling freight to other pioneer settlements from San Antonio to San Saba Texas. After settling in Luckenbach, they expanded their enterprise to raising numerous types of livestock; horses, cattle, sheep, laying hens and turkeys to name a few. The Behrends have produced cotton, milo, corn, oats and wheat in their fields. The Behrends family has always believed in being diversified.
The big diversification came in the 1950's led by the late Arno and Esther Behrends. At this point, it was clear to the Behrends that it was time to move the business in the direction of manufacturing their own feed. With the help of their sons Christian, Monroe, and Cary, Behrends Feed & Fertilizer was created.
In 1980, Arno left the business in very capable hands of Christian and Monroe. Christian was able to look at new opportunities and make them work. He didn't view situations as problems, but as challenges. He was the the number one trouble shooter, feed nutritionist, and engineering & construction genius. Monroe took over the feed mill operations. He oversaw the production of hundreds of different feed formulas. He also managed the grain storage among many other responsibilities.
Graduates of Texas A&M, Scott and Clark Behrends, sons of the late Christian and Vivian Behrends, then partnered with Monroe. Scott purchased all the grain and feed products, was the in-house nutritionist and feed developer , and office guru! Clark managed the Farm & Ranch aspects of the business along with overseeing the maintenance, repairs and improvements of the mill and the trucks.
In 2010 Behrends Feed & Fertilizer decided to test the waters and expand to a second location. They took over Bode's Feed in Harper. Behrends Feed @ Bode's has been a great addition to their business. The two Behrends locations now employ over 50 loyal employees that have helped them become a leader in the feed and fertilizer industry. In 2020 Clark Behrends and his wife, Amy Behrends, took over the the entire company.
